What are Search Engines? Search Engines are databases that can store millions and millions of pages. These pages are most often collected by robots, that search the World Wide Web looking for sites. These databases can be searched by asking for a few selected keywords. Sometimes they will return thousands of possible pages. What is the difference between a Search Engine and a Directory? When an Engine returns search data, it is listed in some that is relevant to the keywords (those listed first have the most number of keywords in them.) Directory return a list of categories. Within the categories are a complete list of all entries that reside there (often in alphabetical order.) How do I register with a Search Engine? First of all, never submit your site until it is complete. The site must include meta tags for description and keywords, proper front end code for engines that do not use meta tags, as well as functional titles. For help with these, drop by Search Engine Watch. Once your code is finished, then submit your site to the engines. There are many companies that will do this for you, for a fee of course. There are also many free submission services where you can do the work and submit your site to multiple engines. Although, these multiple submission services can be wonderful for smaller engines, we recommend you submit to the major engines manually. They all have a page to add you site. After you register, it is important to keep track of where your site ranks in some of the top engines. We recommend manual submission to the following engines:
