What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is quite simply an address.
  • www.yourcompany.com
  • www.usa.gov
  • www.college.edu
  • www.nonprofit.org
  • www.ipcompany.net
Domain names are easier to remember than long strings of numbers, such as 207.120.109.83. The domain name system (DNS) can easily translate the domain name into the numeric address (IP number, or Internet Protocol numbers) it needs to locate the server.

Why should I register?
If you own a domain name that is the same or similar to your company name, then it helps present customers find you. You can also have email accounts which would reflect your domain name, you@yourcompany.com.
If you choose not to register a domain name, then your domain would be something like:
  • www.yourcompany.ipcompany.net
  • www.ipcompany.net/yourcompany
and email would look something like:
  • you@ipcompany.net

What does it cost?
To register your domain name, the big guys on the block, Network Solutions charge $70.00 USD for two years. There are other companies that offer the same domain for less.

How do I pick a name?
Start with your company name or something associated with it, then surf off to Godaddy.com and enter the name in the box. Don't forget the .com
You may have to check quite a few, so be prepared to wait. If you find a domain name you can register it through Godaddy.com . They are less expensive than Network Solutions.
